New York has been a hub for designers since 1790 when Pierre Plante arrived with his French-made silk. He set up shop near Trinity Church on Broadway, now known as "French Street." By 1800 he had set up a shop with 500 pieces but the British seized his goods claiming that they were made from beef tallow from cows slaughtered outside the city limits.
